iPad apps: WordBook

Sometimes you just need a dictionary. Frequently, online dictionaries leave a lot to be desired: they’re incomplete, or worse, they’re crowd-sourced and are potentially incorrect or misleading. When you don’t have your handy paper dictionary in hand or aren’t near the big dictionary in the library, WordBook can help.

I especially like this app because it has spoken pronunciation for every word in the dictionary. That’s a big deal for me: it can sometimes be nearly impossible to figure out how to pronounce an unfamiliar word in our charmingly quirky English language; honestly, would you know how to say “epitome” if you’d never heard it out loud?
