As many of you know, last spring the Drew School community suffered the tragic loss of one of our Freshmen students, Eli Golvin-Klein to suicide. To raise awareness and honor Eli, Drew School is creating a team to walk in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s “Out of the Darkness” walk on Sunday, Sept. 25th.
AFSP is the leading national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide. Drew School has participated in this event a number of times and despite the reason we are there, it has proven to be a supportive, comforting and ultimately uplifting experience. Our goal is to raise awareness and educate our school communities. We would like to invite your students, parents and faculty who would like to join Eli’s Team and walk with us.
The morning consists of the two-mile walk, starting at 9:00am and ends back in the parking lot with a resource fair which is set up to provide information, resources and support. There will be some speakers as well – last year, Senator Leland Yee spoke. If you are unable to attend the event but would like to make a donation, please consider San Francisco Suicide Prevention. SFSP has been a vital resource for Drew School community over that last 9 years and especially last spring. SFSP supports many other independent and public schools in the wider San Francisco bay area free of charge with outreach education and counseling support services. Their programs include crisis teams, internet and phone hotlines as well as prevention education to mention a few. SFSP is the local comprehensive nonprofit agency that could also use your support. http://www.sfsuicide.org/donations-events/donate-now/
