I found an interesting story from KQED’s MindShift blog about one school’s efforts to help students find quiet, peace, and mindfulness during their school day. Visitacion Valley Middle School here in San Francisco begins and ends the day with 15 minutes of silence, when students can pray, meditate, zone out, or even sleep. These moments of quiet seem to be having a marked positive influence on campus.
This reminded me a lot of our Sacred Heart tradition of Espacio: the opportunity to take a few moments for prayerful space to center ourselves. It’s nice to know that other schools in our community share our school’s commitment to reflection in the midst of a busy world.
